Resumo

Postponement of motherhood is becoming common in several low-fertility countries, including Brazil. When women postpone pregnancy to older ages, gestational risks tend to increase. Low birth weight and prematurity are two of the most common gestational outcomes among women of advanced age. The increase in the proportion of births at advanced maternal age in Brazil and the absence of studies which take this trend into account, make relevant the discussion of the possible impacts of advanced age pregnancy. The objective of this paper is to analyze the association between advanced maternal age and the occurrence of low birth weight and premature births, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, 2013 to 2019, considering some characteristics of mother, child and pregnancy. We hypothesize that mothers at advanced ages are at greater risk of having low birth weight and premature children who may die within a few days after birth.
