Resumo

The prevalence of Common Mental Disorders (CMD) among young adults is elevated and can intensify in response to the demands of the university experience. This work aims to identify factors of university experience associated with the occurrence of CMD in a sample of university students from different knowledge areas. The information presented comes from a cross-sectional study between 2017 and 2018, with a sample of undergraduate students from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in São Paulo, Brazil. Identifying possible cases of CMD was performed using the Self Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). The data referring to students aged between 17 and 25 years (n = 6262) was considered, based on the application of Binary Logistic Regression Models. The most excellent chances of having a positive result in the SRQ-20 were associated with negative experiences in the course and the university; having difficulties in interpersonal relationships at the university; belong to minority groups, and experiencing social disadvantage. This study highlights the importance of promoting mental health care actions for university students, considering the different demands and needs of this population.
