Resumo

O presente artigo está centrado na atuação dos movimentos sociais urbanos na África do Sul no atual período de transição política, da qual participam criando uma agenda política progressista. Apresenta uma exposição sobre o conceito de globalização indicando que, diferente do que comumente se afirma, este processo não torna dispensáveis nem a definição de “lugar” nem de “espaço público”, uma vez consideradas a hierarquização mundial de cidades e a rearticulação política das localidades. Focaliza a atuação do movimento civil na África do Sul o qual, embora possua uma infra-estrutura nacional que atinge as políticas de base, poderia se beneficiar de uma agenda radical, voltada para a compreensão das ambigüidades e subjetividades dos grupos que o compõem e distante das definições homogêneas de classe.
